Walking along the ancient Tokaido Road - A Pilgrim’s Path: Adventures and Transformations Series

2026 International Book Awards Finalist — Nonfiction: Cross-Genre / Travel: Guides & Essays

Shall we uncover the mysteries of Japan's unique culture and walk a path as layered and quietly beautiful as your own?

This photo essay chronicles sixteen years of walking the T?kaid? — a historic road established by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, once walked by Matsuo Bash? knowing he might die on the path, yet driven forward by a profound sense of purpose. Countless dreams and stories have passed along this road, each as fleeting as a bubble in a flowing river, quietly shaping the tapestry of time.

The journey begins alone in Tokyo in 2006. Along the way, a wife joins the walk. Together they cross mountain passes, follow coastlines, and move through the four seasons of Japan — past shrines, post towns, and ordinary street corners that hold more history than they appear to.

The trilogy pairs original photography of contemporary Japan with Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e prints of the same stations from the Edo period — inviting readers to see what has changed and what has not across nearly two centuries. Private reflections on roadside objects, small adventures, unexpected encounters, and quiet failures complete the picture.

As the journey progresses, the scenery moves like a haiku — capturing something precise and transient before it disappears.
