2 B R 0 2 B by Kurt Vonnegut is a dystopian short story that examines themes of overpopulation, societal control, and the cost of human life in a seemingly perfect world. Set in a future where population control is strictly enforced, the story takes its title from a play on words: "2 B R 0 2 B," or "to be or not to be" (from Shakespeare’s Hamlet), refers to a government-managed hotline for voluntary euthanasia.
In this society, Earth's population has been capped at 40 million, and every birth requires a corresponding death. This system is maintained by the "Federal Bureau of Termination," which encourages people to volunteer to end their lives to make room for new ones. The story opens in a hospital, where Edward Wehling Jr. awaits the birth of his triplets. While overjoyed at the prospect of fatherhood, Wehling is also devastated, as he needs to find three volunteers to die in order for his children to be born. Facing an impossible choice, he contemplates his options and the cruel trade-offs imposed by society’s rules.
Vonnegut paints a chilling picture of a world where human life is reduced to a simple equation, reflecting on society’s pursuit of a perfectly balanced world at the cost of individual freedom and moral values. Through dark humor and satire, 2 B R 0 2 B challenges readers to consider ethical questions about life, death, and the lengths to which society might go to achieve “utopia.” The story’s bleak yet thought-provoking tone makes it a compelling critique of authoritarian control and the dehumanizing effects of bureaucracy.
