Before she wrote her most well-known novels, a teenage Jane Austen was already poking fun at the sentimental romances of her day and honing the dry wit that would define her later work. Told through a whirlwind of letters, Love and Freindship follows the dramatic life of Laura, a heroine who faints, elopes, and moralizes her way through a series of absurd misfortunes. The story (and its intentionally misspelled title) is an early glimpse of Austen’s comic gift for exposing vanity, pretension, and the perils of being carried away by emotion.

You don’t need to know a thing about the novels it spoofs to enjoy its wild energy and cheerful irreverence. This is a playful reminder that Austen’s sharp eye and sly comedy were already in bloom early on.
