Some books fill a shelf. This one fills a room. We read What Nature Teaches Us aloud as a family, and even the youngest asks for it night after night.
Clay Vilhauer and Amber Vilhauer walk children through the sun, moon, rain, trees, and rivers, showing how each part of nature carries a lesson about kindness, courage, and belonging. The ideas sound simple, yet our children began seeing clouds, birds, and stones with fresh eyes. We read it aloud together, and the room always settles. The final pages ask kids to go outside, observe, draw, and share what they learn. Those prompts became little assignments they enjoyed, not chores.
The illustrations add a calm warmth that holds their attention. Knowing the lead author is only nine, we respect the heart behind this book and would recommend it to parents and teachers alike, with our children helping us write these words.
The writing reads like poetry. Short lines. Easy words. Big feelings. Lessons on patience and generosity feel honest rather than preachy. That alone motivated our children to believe they could write their own thoughts too.
It is a small book with a lasting pull. If you want your children to love nature and understand themselves a little better, keep this one close.
“ I think it’s the books that you read when you’re young that live with you forever. ” ― J.K. Rowling
