So You Want To Be An International Aid Worker

In So You Want To Be An International Aid Worker, Linda Soules takes a child's wish and shows what that wish will demand. A life across any border has the same worth as a life next door, and that belief carries someone toward other people's worst days. The book makes plain what such a life asks, and what it will not allow.

An international aid worker helps people survive a crisis and recover after it. Becoming one takes a needed skill, such as medicine, engineering, or logistics, then practice nearer home, often with the Red Cross, then a first job in a hard posting. The tools include clean water and toilets, a supply chain for tents and grain, a school packed in a box, and cash so families can buy what they need. The reward is seeing a life saved and meeting remarkable courage. The toll is that not everyone can be reached, the conditions exhaust body and heart, and danger falls mostly on local staff.

The sentences are plain, and Soules speaks as an equal. A difficult fact becomes a weight or a sum that can be checked. Questions and small tasks let a reader try the work, not only read about it. Each explanation is followed by its use, so a rule does not sit alone. Short sections and a glossary make it possible to stop, look a word up, and continue the next day.

Young people from about ten to fourteen, and adults reading beside them, are given enough to picture the life before choosing it. The pages suit a child reading alone and also an adult reading alongside. Someone already drawn to this life should have the book.
