The Weapons We're Born With

The Weapons We're Born With opens on Shara, a street thief born with a power the Nightshade Empire kills for. Brett O'Brien treats power as a weapon already in motion, never a gift: the same force that outlaws a child can bleed an empire.

Shara finds sanctuary at the Grove, then leaves on her own when she learns what her power has already cost her; what she does with that knowledge is the book's hardest turn. The soldier she falls in with is a soulless unit catalogued as EM4022, who slowly works out that a number is not a name. Along the way they pull strangers out of Nightshade's path, and he takes a name that finally belongs to him. The larger war closes on Coranth, buried under Mount Pyra, where Resistance, empire, and the Pyre all arrive at once.

O'Brien writes at a cinematic clip, changing narrators chapter by chapter across six voices, and the prose stays plain enough to keep up. Each voice holds its own: Shara thinks in street smarts and guilt; the soldier moves from calculating battles to understanding who they are; Callum counts the cost of his deal in ash and regret; Marysa's "Ever forward," inherited from Dedrick, reads as both vow and wound. The magic gets the same treatment, shown more than explained, so that when someone pulls in more Current than they can hold, the rules arrive as heat, ozone, and burnt skin.

Book 1 of The Currents of War series leaves Solara in pieces. The war is unfinished, the balance of power has shifted, and what Nightshade kept chained beneath Coranth does not stay chained. If you want multi-voice epic fantasy that moves fast, spends its characters hard, and ends by widening the war rather than tidying it, this is a clear place to begin.
