Maxwell Hoffman's "Sinister Knight Twin Akuroji Double Omnibus Trilogy Special Edition" follows Ty "Turbo" Knight, a teenager from the 22nd century who gets sent back to Feudal Japan with Commander Sato. Things go sideways when a shaman named Akuroji clones Ty, and the duplicate—Thad—starts causing trouble by seducing women and generally making a mess of everything.
The whole clone situation is what makes this interesting. Imagine having a version of yourself running around that you can't control, doing all the things you wish you could do but in the worst possible way. Thad has all the confidence and charm that Ty doesn't, but he uses it destructively. It's a decent exploration of identity and what happens when you let your worst impulses take over.
Pacing's solid—doesn't drag, and the Feudal Japan stuff feels right without overdoing the historical details. The rivalry between Noa and Sakura competing for Thad's attention was probably my favorite part. It gives the story actual stakes beyond just chasing down a clone. And yeah, Commander Sato dressing as a woman to catch Thad is ridiculous, but it works. Adds some humor to balance the heavier stuff.
Heads up—this is part of a bigger series and it shows. There's a bunch of character stuff that'll go right over your head if you haven't read his other books. I mean, it's an omnibus, so obviously it's for people who already know what's going on. Also, the editing's a bit rough in spots. Dialogue punctuation gets weird sometimes and some of the sentences are clunky. Not a dealbreaker, but it's there.
It's a solid read if you're into time travel stories with some magic thrown in. The whole thing about dealing with your worst self is handled pretty well, and the Feudal Japan backdrop keeps things interesting. Nothing revolutionary here, but it's entertaining enough.
