Carlene Jae has recently returned home to the small island community of Chantry Cross after a highly publicized and embarrassing divorce from her obscenely wealthy ex-husband. An ethereal mixed-race beauty famous for her poise, kindness, and philanthropic efforts, Carlene has been nicknamed “The Angel” ever since high school due to her polished image—which she actually resents. She is now on the run, wanting nothing more than to take stock of her life and start anew while hoping to find out what happened to the young man that was her first love and someone she never got over.

Zachary Knight lives on the mainland in the town of Surrey Falls and is a skilled craftsman working with reclaimed wood products highly desired by some of the exclusive clientele on Chantry Cross. Faking his way through the motions of life and just barely keeping his head above water financially, Zach has been tormented for years by Carlene's rise to fame. Other women, many women, and a mild flirtation with alcoholism has done nothing to help him forget her. Broken and disappointed, Zach has done everything he can to mend, but the Carlene shaped hole in his heart has never healed.

Neither is aware of the others’ presence in the same area initially, and their unexpected and explosive first meeting is complicated and very public. Zach is then unwittingly lured into a second meeting by Carlene—who is absolutely determined to make it work this time!

Zach is the only person that Carlene could ever be herself around, and Carlene is the only woman Zach ever loved. She’s the hot and famous divorcee; he’s the handsome and stubborn player.
