Her patients are waking up wrong. And the only man with answers just walked out of a fire that should have killed him.
Dr. Sarah Montgomery has the best trauma instincts in Chicago — because they aren't instincts. She's spent her career hiding what she can feel moving beneath the skin of her dying patients. Then something starts wearing them like coats.
Uriel has been running the city's supernatural emergencies since before it had a name. Former Archangel of Protection. Current expert in keeping his distance. He needs a doctor who can see the shadows spreading through Chicago's hospitals — but the first time Sarah touches him, she comes away carrying his memories, his guilt, and a target on her back visible to every monster in the city.
Now the only safe place in Chicago is beside the one being who swore he'd never let anyone that close again. The possessions are spreading. The shadows are organized. And the bond neither of them chose is getting stronger every time they touch.
He's spent millennia protecting humanity. She's about to teach him the difference between protecting someone and loving them.
