You're Pretty Amazing

Some children’s books entertain; a rarer few gently recalibrate how a child sees themselves. Sumaira Ahmed’s You’re Pretty Amazing is that kind of picture book—bright, rhythmic, and quietly bold—reminding kids that “pretty” starts inside, not on a screen.

Rather than a plot with twists, the book moves like a warm conversation you might have at bedtime after a long day of school and endless scrolling. It opens by acknowledging the shiny world children notice—TV smiles, magazines, selfies, make-up, the urge to look “cool.” Then, line by line, it turns the mirror inward. “Come with me,” the narrator says, and we follow a simple procession of everyday moments: trying something new, learning to tie shoes, waiting your turn, asking questions, carrying someone’s bag, choosing honesty, doing the right thing when it’s hard. Each page reframes beauty as brave, resilient, patient, wise, helpful, kind, and trustworthy—virtues kids can practice immediately. We read it aloud as a family, and Emily, Madison, and Ethan started calling out their own examples (“I was pretty patient!”) before the rhyme even landed. The closing thinking questions make it easy for parents to pause, chat, and go deeper together.

What really carries the book is its encouraging narrator voice and the steady, read-aloud rhythm of the rhymes. The pages are built around relatable “little life” moments and clear values, supported by bright, child-friendly graphics that keep young readers engaged. The biggest strength is its clarity and positivity; the only real trade-off is that it’s more message-driven than story-driven.

Heartfelt and best suited for ages 4–8, it’s a great pick for meaningful family reading.
