The author of one of the best inspirational nonfiction books, "Man of the House: A Memoir," Dr. Colm McAindriu, grew up in the Jim Crow Mississippi Delta. His father left them at the age of three. His mother then named him the Man of the House, forcing him to help her raise her remaining twelve children. His childhood was filled with brief moments of joy and learning. In 1963, he graduated from Broad Street High School. He left Chicago in the same year and went to the military. Later, he obtained two doctorate degrees.
