Born in New York City, she was the youngest of three siblings. Her family moved to the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, New York, when she was just a baby. She writes, “Growing up, I was this skinny, scrappy little tomboy, playing stickball on the streets of the Bronx.” Location-wise, she lived approximately three blocks south of Gaelic Park, which is located at West 240th Street and Broadway, and is also primarily known as the home of the New York Gaelic Athletic Association, a cultural hub for New York's Irish community. Both of her parents held a Celtic heritage, with her father, James, being of Irish descent, and her mother, Winifred, being of Scottish/English descent. Her fondest memories of childhood lie in the summers she and her family spent in Montauk Point, Long Island.
