Book description restrictions

Amazon cannot accept the following in a KDP book description. The warning list under the editor flags many of these in real time.

  • Pornographic, obscene, or offensive content
  • Phone numbers, physical mail addresses, email addresses, or website URLs
  • Reviews, quotes, or testimonials (use Editorial Reviews instead)
  • Requests for customer reviews
  • Advertisements, watermarks, or promotional material
  • Time-sensitive information (tour dates, seminars, lectures)
  • Availability, price, or alternative ordering information
  • Spoiler information for Books, Music, Video, or DVD listings
  • Unicode emojis
  • Keyword stuffing or book-tag phrases

Frequently asked questions

KDP currently accepts <b>, <strong>, <i>, <em>, <u>, <br>, <p>, <h4>, <h5>, <h6>, <ol>, <ul>, and <li>. Tags such as <div>, <span>, <a>, <img>, inline style="", and heading levels h1–h3 are stripped or rejected. Only the allowed set is emitted.
No. Amazon reserves h1–h3 for its own product-page layout. New descriptions must use h4 (largest), h5, and h6. Older books may still show grandfathered h2/h3 formatting; copying that markup into a new title will fail. Use the H4 / H5 / H6 buttons here instead.
The book description is the main blurb on your KDP Bookshelf (4,000 characters, including HTML). Editorial Reviews are a separate Author Central section (US) for quotes and endorsements. Amazon forbids reviews and testimonials inside the book description — put those in Editorial Reviews.
That error usually means leftover markup from Word or Google Docs: empty <> tags, zero-width spaces, or unsupported spans. Generate the code here — empty tags, style attributes, and invisible characters are stripped before you copy.
Yes. Amazon counts every character in the source, including tags. Bolding the word “test” uses 11 characters (<b>test</b>), not 4. The character counter matches that rule.
No for Amazon KDP descriptions. Phone numbers, emails, URLs, review requests, prices, and time-sensitive promo dates are not allowed. The warning list flags these as you type. Editorial Reviews may include quoted praise, but still should not include contact details or links.
Each store accepts a slightly different subset. Switch the platform tab before you generate. The toolbar greys out unsupported options (for example, headings on Kobo) so you do not paste tags that store will ignore or reject.
In KDP, edit the book details, scroll to Description, click Source, paste the generated HTML, then Save and Continue. Do not paste into the rich-text view — that can re-wrap your code. Updates on an existing eBook usually appear within 48 hours.
